FEMA shelters in 501 schools

Thirteen million of USD 501’s 143 million dollar bond is being used to build FEMA-certified tornado shelters.

Reinforced concrete is used to build storm shelters up to FEMA standards.

Architects can fortify existing classrooms in schools and transform them into tornado shelters but some types of classrooms are easier to upgrade than others.

FEMA has recently changed its grant guidelines, complicating the certification process.
