Craig Michael Wood, 45, of Missouri, has been charged with murder in the first degree, armed criminal action and child kidnapping in connection to a 10 year old girl’s death.
Authorities also released the criminal complaint about the events surrounding 10 year old Hailey Owens’ murder.
The 10 year old was last seen being pulled into a gold Ford Ranger on Tuesday around 5:00pm, which prompted a multi-state Amber Alert in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Wood was taken into custody about three hours later. On Wednesday morning, authorities say they found what they believed to be Owen’s body.
In the complaint, Springfield Police say when they went to Wood’s residence on Tuesday, they found a vehicle matching a description of the one involved in the abduction.
It goes on to say when Wood was interviewed by investigators, he kept changing his story about where he was Tuesday afternoon. The complaint says he denied having contact with Owens.
The complaint says when officers did a check of Wood’s home for Owens, officers smelled a strong odor of bleach near the basement. Officers went down to check and said the basement floor was wet.
After getting a search warrant on Wednesday afternoon, the complaint says crime scene technicians found two plastic storage containers in the basement. The compliant says they found the body of a small child in the bottom container and the body was concealed inside two trash bags.
The compliant says that body was confirmed to be that of Owens. The Chief Investigator for the Greene County Medical Examiner’s Office said it appeared that Owens appeared to have a gunshot wound to the base of her skull. The complaint says it also looked like Owens had marks on her arms similar to being tied up.
The compliant says investigators found a spent .22 caliber shell in the basement.
