Local swimmers make a splash at state prelims

State swimming and diving prelims in Topeka, KS

The state swimming and diving prelims are underway at Capitol Federal Natatorium.

In class 5-1A, Hayden’s Robbie Schmidt finished second in his 200-yard freestyle heat, while his brother, John-Martin Schmidt, is the top overall qualifier. He was less than a 1/2 second off the record time, finishing with a time of 1:42. Nine seconds faster than second place.

Shawnee Heights Kevin McGowan also had a great day. He’s the top qualifier in both the 200-yard individual medley, and the 100-yard breaststroke.

In class 6-A, Washburn Rural is well represented. The Junior Blues team posts the top time in the 200-yard medley relay.

Rural’s John Fritsch wins his heat and comes in 3rd overall in the 200-yard IM. His teammate, Michael Prekopy is 6th in the event, while Manhattan’s Cameron Beauregard comes in 8th.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Rural’s Craig Haug and Bryan Hahn finish 3rd and 4th in the prelims.

Hahn also wins the prelim for the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Junior Blues Nick Badsky is the top qualifier in both the 100-yard backstroke, and the 100-yard freestyle.

5-1A finals begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and 6-A starts at 3:30 pm.
