The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office has seen an increase in reports of fraudulent callers claiming to be Westar Energy employees attempting to collect on past due accounts. The scam involves the caller requesting customers to provide financial information or purchase prepaid money cards to pay a past-due bill. The caller claims that if the amount is not paid energy services would be disconnected.
Scammers can deliberately falsify the telephone number and/or name relayed as the Caller ID information to disguise the identity of the calling party. Local numbers, as well as “Westar Energy”, may display on Caller ID units associated with these fraudulent calls. Westar Energy is encouraging customers to hang up and call their Customer Relations Center at 800-383-1183 if they receive a suspicious call. Customers should always have the opportunity to call Westar Energy back to verify information. More information is available on the Westar Energy website, Westarenergy.com, about scams and how to identify Westar employees.
If you believe you are a victim of a scam, please call the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office at 251-2200.
