Kansas House panel to open school funding hearings

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – A Kansas House committee is set to begin two days of hearings on a proposal to increase funding for public schools in an effort to satisfy a state Supreme Court ruling.

The House Appropriations Committee was scheduled to hear from opponents of the plan on Monday and from supporters on Tuesday.

The proposal seeks to address two flaws in funding for poor school districts identified by the court in its March 7 ruling.

The fix is estimated to cost $129 million, but the House plan would fund part of that increase by adjusting transportation aid to all 286 school districts.

It is unclear how quickly the committee will act on the measure and schedule a full House debate. Legislators begin a three-week recess on Friday.
