April 1, 2014-Emporia State scored three runs in the final two innings to post a 4-3 come from behind win over #26 Central Missouri in non-conference action at the Trusler Sports Complex.
The Hornets got on the board first when Levi Parker led off with a single and came home on Toby Cornejo’s RBI single up the middle. The lead would hold until the top of the fourth. Dylan Hanson had an RBI single to tie the score and Dusty Maas hit a hit a two run single through the right side to give the Mules a 3-1 lead.
Both teams were scoreless through the next three innings. Central Missouri had runners at first and third with one out in the seventh. Reliever Matt Hinkley was able to get Trevor Jones in a rundown between third and home for the second out and then struckout pinch hitter Mile Orscheln for the final out.
Parker led off the bottom of the eighth for the Hornets with a double and came home on Dean Long’s eighth home run of the year to tie the score. Long had struck out in his first three at bats before coming through in the eighth.
The Mules brought in closer Zach Davis to start the bottom of the ninth. Justin Harris reached on an error by Maas at second when he fumbled the grounder. Jordan Hodges and Dalton Piecukonis both worked pinch hit walks to load the bases. With one out Parker hit a chopper in front of the plate that the catcher Molbury fielded but he could not get back to home in time to get Harris out at the plate.
Parker was two for five with two runs scored and the game winning RBI. Cornejo was two for four with an RBI while Long went one for four with two RBI. Hinkley pitched 3.0 scoreless innings to get his first win of the season for the Hornets.
Emporia State is back in action this weekend with a four game series against Washburn. The first game of the series will be on Friday night in Topeka with a double header scheduled for Saturday afternoon in Emporia before the series wraps up with another single game on Sunday in Topeka.
