Irritations prompt evacuation of Lakewood school

DENVER (AP) — Seven students at a suburban Denver school were hospitalized and about two dozen others were decontaminated on site after complaining of skin and eye irritation.

The Denver Post reports ( ) students on the playground of the Jefferson County Open School in Lakewood began complaining just before 1 p.m. Monday. Firefighters set up a decontamination tent and evacuated the pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade school as a precaution.

Scott Rogers, chief of the West Metro Fire Protection District, says investigators have eliminated pepper spray and fertilizer as possible irritants, but it’s still unclear what caused the students to react. First responders don’t expect any long-term or lingering effects.

In all, 30 students and a teacher’s aide were affected. Investigators have not found the source of the irritation.
