FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Police in Fort Myers say the driver of a car that slammed into a packed church just as its annual Easter concert was about to begin said she was looking for a parking spot when the car malfunctioned.

A police spokesman says the young woman told investigators the car drove “straight into the building” and that she said the brakes malfunctioned.

Twenty-one people were injured as the car barreled through the brick outer wall and several rows of pews at the Second Haitian Baptist Church about 8 p.m. Sunday when 200 people were inside.

Church members used car jacks to lift the vehicle off of people who were trapped underneath.

Investigators are looking into the crash even though they believe it was an unfortunate traffic accident.
