Engstrom pleads guilty to murder, attempted murder

District Attorney Chad Taylor announced Wednesday that 34-year-old Michael Dean Engstrom of Topeka plead guilty and was convicted of Murder in the First Degree, Felony Murder and Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Intentional in connection with the death of Ricky Robert Mitchell and wounding of Bridget Gakle on February 13, 2013.

The First Degree Murder charge carries a life sentence without the possibility of parole for 20 years. Shawnee County District Court Judge Richard Anderson accepted the Engstrom’s pleas and set sentencing for May 30, 2014.

The case was investigated by the Topeka Police Department. Senior Assistant District Attorney Todd Hiatt is handling the prosecution of this matter.
