Residents of a Topeka apartment complex dealt with a fire Sunday morning. The Topeka Fire Department says crews were called to the Cottages of Topeka around 11 a.m. to 620 NW Lyman road after lightning struck the twelve unit apartment building sending the roof ablaze.
A man working at Jem’s Automotive shop across the street heard loud thunder, noticed flames on the roof and rushed over to help the residents evacuate. Nobody was injured in the fire, but officials report large amounts of smoke and water damage in apartments 405, 407 and 408.
Apartment 406 was completely gutted from the blaze. The building has been shut down awaiting investigation from insurance companies. The red cross has taken in two of the apartment’s residents.
