At 1:13 Friday morning, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of US 75 near 110th St. in Jackson County. Deputies were assigned to look for the vehicle as it would soon be entering Shawnee County.
At 1:20 a.m., a deputy traveling north over the Westgate Bridge observed the vehicle traveling southbound, towards them in the northbound lane. The deputy then observed as it struck a northbound Mazda truck head-on.
The male driver, and only occupant, of the Mazda was extricated from the vehicle by the Topeka Fire Department. He was transported by AMR to a local hospital for medical treatment. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The vehicle traveling the wrong direction was a gray Ford Explorer. Angel Luis Rivera, 43, of Topeka was the only occupant. He refused medical treatment and was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Rivera has been charged with driving under the influence, driving while revoked, no motor vehicle insurance and driving on the wrong side of divided highway.
The Accident is still under investigation at this time.
