Rural softball sweeps Junction City on Cancer Awareness Night

Washburn Rural honors the Holmberg family

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Rural Lady Blues softball team swept their doubleheader against Junction City on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 13-0, and the second game 7-0.

They were playing for something more than just the score. It was Cancer Awareness Night at the ballpark, and the Lady Blues honored the Holmberg family between games.

Maggie Holmberg played for the Lady Blues from 2007-10.  She was a four year starter, played on the 2008 state championship team.  Her father, David Holmberg, died a few weeks ago after a year long battle with cancer.

Many of Maggie’s former teammates and parents were on hand for the ceremony which included a moment of silence, a song, and the releasing of pink balloons.
