TOPEKA, Kan. – Head coach Chris Herron announced Thursday that Wichita State freshman defensive specialist Alyssa Carney will return to the Topeka area and play volleyball this fall at Washburn.

The 2013 Washburn Rural High School graduate and Auburn, Kansas, native gives Herron’s 2014 roster 10 newcomers with two NCAA Division I transfers, a junior college transfer and seven high school seniors.

Carney played in 34 of 35 matches for the Shockers last year with two starts on the back row. She averaged 1.97 digs a set and served a team-best 19 aces. She reached double digits in digs eight times and led the team three times. Wichita State went 28-7 and won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season with a 15-3 mark. The Shockers won the conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament.

She earned second team all-state her final three years at Rural and earned all-city and all-league all four years she lettered. She was the starting libero her first two years and a starting outside hitter her final two years. The Junior Blues won the 6A state title three times in her career.

High School teammate Erika Lane announced in April that she will transfer to Washburn after playing a year of basketball at Tulsa. Carney, Lane and McKenzie Hartzog, a junior college All-American, make up the three transfers coming to Washburn. The seven high school seniors come from Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.

Eight letterwinners will return including All-America middle hitter Marissa Cox as a senior and all-MIAA selections Leanna Willer and Sarah Vicory as sophomores.

The Ichabods won their third MIAA title in the last four years this year with a 31-6 overall record and 15-1 league record. They went to their 10th straight NCAA tournament and the 11th in Herron’s 12 years with the program.

The 2014 season will begin September 5-6 with four matches at the Midwestern State Classic. The home and MIAA opener is September 16 against Emporia State at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
