TOPEKA, Kan. – Trying to save money might seem like a daunting task, but there are small changes you can make to your daily routine that make a big difference.
Tip #1: Cut out the fancy coffee.
A large coffee from a chain coffee shop can cost up to $5. If you buy one of those every morning before work, that’s $25 a week. Multiply that by 52 weeks in a year, and you’re spending $1,300 a year on coffee.
Instead, invest in a home coffee maker and a thermos, and bring your own coffee to work.
Tip #2: Brown bag your lunch.
If buying lunch at work costs $5 but making lunch at home only costs $2.50, then in a year, you could afford to create a $500 emergency fund and still have money left over.
Tip #3: Eat out one fewer time each month.
Eating out one fewer time each month doesn’t seem like an impossible task, and it’s a great way to save money. If it costs you $25 to eat out, but only $5 to eat in, you save $20 each time you choose to eat in. If you skip the restaurant meal once a month, you’ll save $240 a year. And if you have a family that eats out with you, the savings are even greater!
Tip #4: Opt for a reusable water bottle.
You might be surprised to know that bottled water is more expensive than gasoline.
A 20-ounce bottle of water costs about $2 at the grocery store. That’s about $0.10 an ounce.
According to GasBuddy.com, the average price of a gallon of gas in Kansas is $3.49. That’s less than $0.03 per ounce.
That means bottled water is three times more expensive than gas!
Tap water is much cheaper than bottled water. Switch to a refillable water bottle to save a bundle.
Tip #5: Don’t touch that credit card!
We all need a credit card for emergencies, but when it comes to daily spending, put that credit card away!
Credit cards often come with high interest rates. So that $5 coffee you bought with your credit card will end up being much more expensive if you don’t pay it off right away.
Instead, use money you know you already have. Stick to cash or your debit card for smart buying and saving.
