County Commission approves ballot question on sales tax

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) The Shawnee County Commission approved a countywide ballot question for November 4th asking voters about extending a half-cent sales tax for 15 years.

Revenue would go toward economic development, infrastructure improvements and improvements at the Kansas Expocentre and Topeka Zoo.

County counselor “rich eckert” stressed at the meeting that the *county does not impose the tax.

“What we do is put this on a ballot and let the voters decide whether to impose this tax upon themselves so when we hear those comments well you’re just raising our taxes no we’re giving you the opportunity to have a say in what your taxes are and what projects you might like to see in our community.” said County Counselor Rich Eckert.

The ballot question will now be sent to the Topeka City Council.

If they approve, the measure comes back to the county commission for final approval before it’s placed on the ballot.
