WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Visitors to the Kansas Aviation Museum in Wichita are getting a rare chance this weekend to climb aboard eight of the museum’s 13 outdoor planes at its “Play on a Plane” event.

The fourth annual event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Visitors will be allowed to board such planes as a B-52, KC-135, Boeing 727 and Boeing 737.

Museum spokeswoman Kaitlin Whelan says the facility doesn’t have enough money to routinely monitor guests who go inside the planes, which are expensive to maintain and restore.

Whelan says volunteers will be at each plane Saturday to explain its historical significance. She says many people don’t grasp the importance of Wichita in the aviation industry.
