TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Nearly 50 jobs remain open at the Shawnee County Sheriff’s office after budget cuts over the past few years. Sheriff Herman Jones says he’s understaffed.

That number includes eighteen deputies and 19 communication center positions. Sheriff Herman Jones says he has serious concern that calls for service are affected by inadequate staffing. According to him, the department has averaged 38 total vacant positions for the last five years. He says the shortage requires overtime to adequately fulfill their duties of public safety.

Sheriff Jones says he hopes the Shawnee County Commission will see fit to fully fund the sheriff’s 2015 budget.
