(WNYT) A Saratoga, New York man who was kept from graduating by family illness and World War II received his high school diploma Thursday, 73 years after he was supposed to.
Pfc. Thomas Smith walked across the stage at Saratoga Performing Arts Center as the Class of 2014 gave him a standing ovation. Smith had to drop out of school as a teen because his parents became ill and his older brother was drafted into World War II.
Later, Smith himself was drafted and served on the battlefields of Europe.
