New details in Monday Topeka shooting

Topeka, KS (KSNT) – New details emerged Tuesday into what lead up to a shooting in a Topeka residential neighborhood Monday afternoon, sending one man to the hospital in critical condition.

The shooting, which happened shortly after 12:15 p.m. was described as a “domestic dispute” both neighbors as well as an employee of the BP convenience store where the shooting occurred. The employee tells Kansas First News both the alleged shooter and the intended victim were frequent patrons of the store.

“That bullet went for the chick,” says neighbor Michelle Stanley. “Because th were fighting. Not him and the other guy, him and his girlfriend.”

A gas station employee, who asked not to be identified, says alleged shooter Daniel Creigut saw his girlfriend across the street with another man. The woman rushed to this gas station for shelter where employees helped lock her in a closet. Creigut fired one shot from outside the station while customer Bryon Snyder attempted to block the door. The bullet struck Snyder, then Creigut pushed his was inside and fired two more shots while searching for the woman before police arrived.

Today, the gas station and the surround neighborhood had a steady traffic of people, many still talking about the shooting.

“Who is it? You never know if it’s a family member that got shot or if it was a friend,” says Stanley.

And the violence has those living here – concerned.

“When I was younger,” says Stanley “Yeah, there would be robberies. But there was never shootings around here!”

Karen Noland agrees, but can’t imagine moving. She lives with her son, a member of the Sheriff’s Office.

“Some of the guys from work teas him about living here,” she says “but we’re gonna be here for quite a while.

Creigut was arraigned on a variety of charges Tuesday morning, including four counts of attempted murder, and is being held in the Shawnee County Jail on $1 million bail.

Snyder is recovering at a local hospital where his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious.
