Ichabods to play Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Washburn Ichabod football game with Northwest Missouri State scheduled for Nov. 15 this season has been moved from Maryville, Mo. to the National Football League’s Arrowhead Stadium and the home of the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City, Mo. Kickoff time and ticket information will be announced soon.

“Our players coaches and fans are very excited to play at Arrowhead,” 13th-year Ichabod head coach Craig Schurig said. “We look forward to playing in front of our alumni and fan base in the Kansas City area inside a tremendous NFL facility. What a great opportunity for us to play at the home of the Chiefs. It is an honor and privilege.”

The Washburn/Northwest match up will return to Arrowhead during the 2015 season as well and the Ichabods will be designated the home team for the game.

“We are excited as a University and as a fan base to have a game in Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium,” said athletics director Loren Ferré. “We have a great group of fans who travel to our games and I know the Ichabods will be well-represented in Kansas City for the game against the Bearcats.”

Washburn went 8-3 during the 2013 season climbing to as high as a No. 8 ranking in the NFCA top 25 coaches poll while receiving votes in the final poll of the season. Overall the Ichabods have recorded a school-best ten-straight winning seasons under Schurig and have averaged at least seven wins in each of the last seven seasons with a double-digit win total of 10 in 2011.

The Bearcats are the defending national champions going 15-0 during the 2013 campaign.

Under Schurig the Ichabods have gone 2-0 in neutral site games winning the 2004 Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs 36-33 over Northern State while picking up a 51-18 win over Midwestern State in the 2010 Kanza Bowl played at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka. 

Washburn has approximately 5,300 alumni in the Kansas City area.
