Family gets a blast out of fireworks business

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man who started selling firecrackers, bottle rockets and other fireworks from a Lincoln street corner in 1957 is still in the holiday blast business.

The Lincoln Journal Star says Pat Egan was only 15 in 1957 when a customer at a grocery store where Egan worked gave Egan some fireworks on consignment and some red, white and blue bunting to decorate his sales table. Egan set up his operation at the corner of 26th and Holdrege and began what became his 57-year fireworks career.

Egan lives in Florida but returns to Lincoln for about three months each year, selling fireworks and organizing the Nebraska Boat, Sport and Travel show. He oversees about a dozen tents in Lincoln, and his daughter Erin Egan runs one of them.
