Burglary leads to shooting at former Topeka restaurant

TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) One person is in custody after an early morning burglary led to a shooting at a former Topeka restaurant.

The shooting happened just after one o’clock this morning when two suspects broke into El Centinela on Belle Avenue.

Kent Lindemuth made a call to the police this morning.

His property was being broken into while he was still inside.

He told the dispatcher he was holding two suspects at gun point.

Patrol units arrived outside the building and that’s when one of the suspects tried to run.

Officers heard a shot, Lindemuth has fired one round, but didn’t hit anyone.

Both suspects were arrested, one had been identified as 36-year-old Matthew Schuetz.

The name of the other suspect hasn’t been released.

Surrounding businesses tell Kansas First News they’ve witnessed a lot of activity around the old restaurant in recent months.

Business owners say police were called here to a break-in not to long ago and they wonder whether it’s related to gang activity.

Schuetz has been booked for aggravated burglary, attempted theft and criminal damage.

No word yet on whether the other person arrested will be charged.
