Teen shoots stepfather over bad grades

(KGET)  New details were released Tuesday about the Bakersfield, California 17-year-old accused of killing his stepfather. Court documents said it all started with a conversation about Kody Ryan’s bad behavior.

The police report says Ryan had got an F, missed curfew and wasn’t doing his chores. In the report, his mother tells police it wasn’t a bad argument, but when her son went to the bathroom it turned deadly.

Ryan’s mother tells police: “there really wasn’t any bad argument or yelling or screaming.” The document says at one point his mother “went to the kitchen” and “her son went to go to the bathroom and her husband followed him.”

That’s when the report says Ryan’s mother heard a “loud bang” from their master bedroom. His mother told police when she got to the back room Ryan was standing near the foot of the bed and stated, “I’m sorry.” The report says his stepfather, Derick Mitchell, had a single gunshot wound to the chest.

When police arrived officers said that Ryan said while sobbing, “It was just an argument. I was only trying to scare him. So I grabbed the gun in the dresser. I didn’t know it was loaded. Why was it loaded?”
