TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) In downtown Topeka Wednesday night, police took some time off to honor officers who went “above and beyond” to keep the city safe.
Five officers were presented with the department’s Medal of Merit. Its the department’s second highest commendation for officers who distinguish themselves for bravery, heroism, or exceptional behavior.
Honored this year were officers Lee Trout, Zach Goodman and Mark Perry as well as Corporal Mike Hren and Sergeant Dan Wilson.
The department received a five-year, 75,000 dollar gift from Topeka-based Security Benefit. The money will be used to expand the department’s body-worn camera program. The cameras show exactly what an officer is seeing while on duty and are used for investigations, prosecutions, and training.
Last year the company gave 19 bullet proof vests to graduating police academy cadets.
