TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) – Topeka Police used tear gas Friday night to end an hours long standoff prompted by a domestic near the intersection of SW Lydia and Gage.
Just before 10:45 p.m. Kansas First News crews heard “3 bangs and officer’s yelling on a bullhorn – Jessie, you’re under arrest.” Moments before officers had been seen in gas masks and carrying a battering ram.
KSNT Photojournalist Adam Stephenson says a short while later tear gas began floating through the air, and the suspect was brought out of the home without further incident.
Sgt. Kristen Marr of the Topeka Police Department says the man inside the home was not considered armed at the time. However, negotiators and SWAT were on the scene since shortly after the incident began around 7 tonight. The man was belived to be the only person in the house.
Marr says the standoff started as a domestic disturbance call.
The area around SW Lydia and Gage was blocked off by police for several hours. Police will allow local residents to their homes if they’ve been out for the night, but those already at home were urged to stay inside. .
