Emporia is going green

EMPORIA, Kan. (KSNT) City commissioners in Emporia are trying to make the city greener.

It’s a project six years in the making. The city already approved a curbside recycling program and Wednesday night they met to set bid dates for collection trucks and bins.

With the new program 7,600 customers would be able to opt-in to bi-weekly curbside pickup, a benefit to the environment and households.

“Great recycling markets better than average and with our funds up, we’ve got enough to take care of the capital expenses right now,” says Director of Sanitation Keith Senn. “So we don’t have to charge the public anything.”

Senn says the city doesnt plan on charging households for the first two years.

Emporia’s curbside recycling is set to begin next summer.
