Sales tax ballot measure prompts special Topeka council meeting

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka city council will meet in special session Tuesday, July 22nd in a last attempt to come up with a spending plan for local sales tax revenue.

The meeting was called by Mayor Larry Wolgast Friday and will be held in the council chambers starting at 6:00 p.m..

The meeting was prompted by the council’s failure Tuesday night to reach a decision on how to spend revenue generated by a joint city-count half-cent sales tax levy.

While members of the Shawnee County Commission have decided what they want to spend their share of the money on, the council has yet to set spending targets for approximately $487M.

Council members hope to get a plan put together at the upcoming meeting in hopes voters will approve an extension of the tax on the November general election ballot.
