LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – According to KSHB, a young child was shot and killed Friday evening by a man following a high-speed chase, according to Leavenworth police.
The child was abducted from an unknown area early Friday evening, said Leavenworth Police Chief Patrick Kitchens. The chase began in Atchison County, Kan., before briefly crossing into Missouri, then back across the state line and eventually ending in a construction zone at about 7:15 p.m. in Leavenworth.
The chase ended near 20th Street and Metropolitan. Once stuck in the construction zone, Kitchens says the suspect began exchanging gunfire with police, then he believed the man shot into the car, killing the child. Sometime during the gunfire, KItchens said, the suspect was struck and wounded.
Kitchens said they believed the child’s shooting was intentional.
The suspect was transported to a Kansas City-area hospital in serious condition. No officers were injured, and police remained on the scene Friday night as part of their investigation. Kitchens said additional information would be released Saturday morning in Leavenworth.
