(KSNT) – There’s a farm in Kansas that’s different from any other local farm and what this farm grows should be found far from the plains.
James Spearman farms tropical fruits and fish just west of Wamego. This unusual farm started as an effort to help keep his diabetic father healthy.
He sells some of his tilapia to farmers across the country. They use the algae-eating fish to clean out their stock ponds before winter.
Spearman hopes to build enough self-sustaining ecosystems around the Manhattan area to feed the entire city more than 100,000 people for an entire year.
