On July 26th, Lawrence officers were dispatched to 1117 New York Street in reference to a woman deceased inside the home. Based on observations at the scene the death appeared to be suspicious.
An autopsy was performed late Saturday night. The victim was later positively identified as 26-year-old Christine Kaplan, a resident of the home. Crime scene investigators from the Lawrence Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation processed the scene until late Tuesday afternoon.
Detectives began to seek a woman who was known to the victim and had possibly stayed at the home in the past. On Wednesday afternoon detectives located her in Topeka at the Shawnee County Jail, where she was incarcerated on an unrelated charge. She has been identified as 38 year old Angelica M. Kulp. Lawrence Police Detectives interviewed Kulp regarding the death, as crime scene personnel examined physical evidence and other personnel continued to follow leads.
Late Wednesday an affidavit was submitted to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office outlining the results of the investigation thus far. After review, an arrest warrant for Kulp was issued on a charge of first degree murder. She remains in the Shawnee County Jail on the unrelated charge.
Kulp will not return to face her charge in Douglas County District Court until her charges in Shawnee County District Court are resolved.
