(NBC News) Congress is heading home for a five week summer break without agreeing on a plan to solve the humanitarian and law enforcement crisis on the U.S. border, and there’s plenty of finger pointing on both sides.
Despite the surge of Central America children straining law enforcement and swamping detention centers, there’s no fix President Obama can sign. He blamed the GOP.
“House Republicans as we speak are trying to pass the most extreme and unworkable version of the bill that they know is going nowhere,” Mr. Obama said in a Friday afternoon press conference.
The day before their summer break, divided House Republicans did come together with two goals: Secure the border using National Guard troops and block President Obama from ordering that more migrant children can stay in the United States.
The GOP plan would end the children’s right to an asylum hearing, enraging Democrats concerned about violence in their home countries.
“The Republicans want to indiscriminately return children to their death,” claims California’s Rep. Tony Cardenas.
The Obama plan is to speed up asylum hearings, not end them.
