Countdown to college football season – local teams

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The countdown to kickoff is now in its final month before the 2014 college football season gets underway.

Last year was full of high’s and low’s for our local teams, and this year.. Expect nothing different.

Starting in the big 12.. The Kansas State Wildcats come into the season ranked 21st in the coaches poll following their Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl win over Michigan last December. Bill Snyder’s ball club is also picked to finish 3rd in the conference behind Baylor and Oklahoma.

The ‘Cats return quarterback Jake waters, and the electric Tyler Lockett on offense. The defense is loaded up with talent, Led by senior Ryan Mueller.

The Kansas Jayhawks are 3-40 in Big 12 play over the last five years, and haven’t won a road game since 2009. Charlie Weis has big goals in his 3rd season with the ‘Hawks however, and it all starts with three win-able non-conference games to begin the season.

Sophomore quarterback Montell Cozart will bring a new dynamic to the Kansas offense, which certainly needs a spark.

In the MIAA, the Emporia State Hornets return several weapons from their high-flying offense, including now junior quarterback, Brent Wilson who set an ESU record with 33 touchdown passes last season. The 9-2 Hornets saw their season come to an end after a loss to Minnesota-Duluth in the Division II playoffs.

The Washburn Ichabods are all set to pick up where they left off last season as well. Senior’s Mitch Buhler and Vershon Moore will lead the ‘Bods who averaged more than 40 points and 400 yards of offense per contest a season ago.

Highlighting their schedule will be the regular-season finale against the defending MIAA champions, the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats, in the ‘Fall Classic’ at Arrowhead Stadium.

Speaking of schedules, Both wWshburn and Emporia State kick off their season’s with home games on Thursday September 4th. KU gets going that Saturday, September 6th, while K-State takes the field at the end of the month on August 30th against Stephen F. Austin.
