Roberts in tricky fall race after Kansas primary

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Three-term U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts’ hard-won victory over an aggressive tea party challenger in the Kansas Republican primary pushes him into a trickier-than-usual fall race.

He’s still favored to win but is likely to be dogged by the same issues.

Roberts immediately called Tuesday night for Republicans to unite, so they can fight President Barack Obama and fellow Democrats in Congress.

Roberts received 48 percent of the vote in final but unofficial primary results, to 41 percent for Milton Wolf, a Leawood radiologist backed by tea party groups. Two lesser-known candidates split the rest.

Roberts prevailed as conservative GOP congressmen Mike Pompeo and Tim Huelskamp also won hotly contested races.

Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and GOP Secretary of State Kris Kobach both won contested primaries.
