Topeka boy honored for taking action to save mother

This month’s “Champion of Character” is a young man nominated by his grandfather. The Safe Streets Coalition and the city of Topeka honored Johnathan Kelly with the award Wednesday.

The ten-year old took the initiative to help his mother who suffered a serious injury. He pushed the emergency button on the home’s security system and waited outside on the driveway for emergency responders to arrive. Johnathan then took it upon himself to call his grandparents and tell them what had happened. The Champion of Character awards are presented monthly.
