TOPEKA (KSNT) – Washburn football begins Fall camp on Saturday and the Ichabods are anxious to get workouts underway.
“I really think our guys trained hard over the summer and they’re ready to go,” Washburn head coach Craig Schurig said. “We have great senior leadership and as coaches and players you can kind of sense that they just want to get started.”
Washburn finished the 2013 campaign at (8-3). The Ichabods jumped out to an (8-0) start last season but lost the final three games on the schedule.
“We have a lot of people back with a lot of experience and a lot of young guys who played last year,” Washburn senior quarterback Mitch Buhler said. “Experience is a little more than last year. I think with team camaraderie and togetherness is a little more than last year as well.”
The Ichabods return seven starters on offense but had to replace all-conference talent across on the defensive side of the football.
One of the returners is senior wide receiver DaJuan Beard. He appeared in only seven games last season after battling injuries.
“It’s something that I love to do and something I’ve been doing since I was a kid just being on the field I feel that it’s natural for me,” said Beard who sat out the entire 2012 season as a redshirt. “It’s my natural territory and I love it. I can’t get enough of it. It’s an amazing feeling.”
Washburn opens up the season at home against Lindenwood University on Thursday, September 4th.
