TOPEKA (KSNT) – Fresh off a convincing win in the Tuesday Primary Election, Kansas 2nd District Congress Woman Lynn Jenkins made another stop in Topeka Friday morning.
Jenkins visited the hiring center for the new Walmart Super Center in Topeka. It will help with hiring about 250 people for the new store. As part of its Veterans Welcome Home Commitment, a job will be offered to any qualified veteran who has been honorably discharged within the past twelve months.
Jenkins also touched on the bill signed Thursday by the president that will pump 16 billion dollars towards health care assistance for veterans.
“I think the goal was, especially in our rural areas where folks don’t have access to a VA facility, that they can get the care they need in their community and the bill provided them a little extra assistance for those that live more than 40 miles away from a VA facility; I think that’s very important, certainly important for a state like Kansas where we are so rural.”
The new Walmart store near 25th and California is set to open this fall.
The veterans hiring program began on Memorial Day of last year and officials say more than 750 veterans have been hired in Kansas and more than 48,000 nationwide.
