Police-mayor tensions mount over chokehold death

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police have found themselves at odds with Mayor Bill de Blasio over the appearance he is taking sides against them after a suspect’s in-custody chokehold death.

Union officials were angered by the sight of the mayor, Police Commissioner William Bratton and the Rev. Al Sharpton seated together at City Hall last week while Sharpton took shots at the police department.

The president of a powerful police union called the scene “insulting.” Another union official hinted at a work slowdown at the nation’s largest police department.

Bratton came to de Blasio’s defense Friday, calling him “very pro-cop.”

The rift stems from last month’s arrest of Eric Garner. An amateur video appears to show an officer putting him in a banned chokehold after he refused to be handcuffed.
