TOPEKA (KSNT) – After claiming its third MIAA title out of the last four years Washburn volleyball enters the season with similar aspirations.
However, it will be a new-look Ichabod squad. The team returns only one senior and welcome 11 new players to the program, including seven freshmen.
“Right now it’s kind of like Yahtzee,” Washburn head coach Chris Herron said. “We just put the dice in a cup and shake it up, roll it out there and see what happens.”
The lone senior senior is a good one – AVCA All-American first team member Marissa Cox.
“A lot of the personalities that are coming in are very strong, great personalities, so I think the returners are really excited to see what they can add to us and see what they can do for us,” Cox said.
Herron begins his 13th season at Washburn. During that time he’s led the Ichabods to 10-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
This year, the goals remain the same despite the challenging region.
“Six teams in our region finished in the top ten in the country,” Herron said. “So to even get out of our region is a huge chore because the seven-time defending national champion is in our region.”
Washburn opens the season at the Midwestern State Classic in Wichita Falls, Tex.
“We have a really strong conference,” Cox said. “We have a really tough region so I think our goal this year is to push past both of those.”
