SHAWNEE COUNTY (KSNT) – The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office says there have been numerous reported instances in Shawnee County where citizens were contacted and told they either owed fines or had warrants issued for their arrests due to missing jury duty.
The individual calling claims to be a law enforcement officer and provides a phone number. Citizens being contacted are instructed to purchase “Green Dot” cards from local merchants and report to a pre-arranged destination. Destinations given thus far have ranged from the Shawnee County Courthouse; Topeka Municipal Court; as well as the Kansas Court of Appeals. People are then instructed that a representative will meet them there for payment.
In the event a person would fail to appear for jury duty, the Jury Coordinator would initially send a post card with information to contact the Jury Coordinator’s Office. At no time during this process would a law enforcement officer or jury coordinator contact a person requesting money for any jury related issues.
Those who would like to verify their jury status can visit the Shawnee County Court website at http://www.shawneecourt.org/ and follow the Jury Duty Information link.
