Second motorcycle rider dies after Great Bend crash

GREAT BEND, Kan. –Reno County reports a second motorcycle rider has died from injuries sustained in an accident over the weekend.

Reno County Jail Deputy Shawn Schellenger and his wife Danielle were riding a motorcycle in the 5900 block of 10th street in Great Bend around 2:20 p.m. Saturday.

A pickup truck pulling a trailer was going eastbound when the trailer detached and crossed the center line into oncoming traffic.

Lieutenant Brown with the Great Bend Police Department says the trailer then hit the motorcycle the Schellengers were riding.

Both were flown to Wichita for treatment. Reno County confirms Danielle died from her injuries late Saturday. Shawn, a Reno County jail deputy, passed away from his injuries Sunday.

A separate motorcyclists was next to the two injured laid down his bike and was not injured. All motorcycle riders were wearing helmets.

The accident remains under investigation. The Kansas Highway Patrol is assisting with the investigation. The case will be turned over to the district attorney’s office for review.
