HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — Event organizers hope the sale of five customized guitars at a fundraiser will raise $50,000 to support the construction of the Reno County Veterans’ Memorial.
The instruments will be covered in patriotic artwork and auctioned off in November at the Veterans Tribute Concert and Auction, the Hutchinson News reported (http://bit.ly/XxmewK). Each of the four guitars will have artwork that will recognize the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines. The fifth guitar will have a stars and stripes design.
The guitars will be made by Chris Mitchell Guitars in Statesboro, Georgia.
A Hutchinson music center is selling the guitars to organizers at a reduced rate, and corporate donors are also being sought to help sponsor the purchase of the instruments.
The cost to build the memorial is about $250,000. Its groundbreaking is expected to happen in 2015.
Any veteran born in Reno County or a resident for at least 10 years is eligible to be recognized at the memorial, which will feature flagpoles, retired military equipment and granite panels bearing the names of up to 15,000 Reno County veterans.
The fundraiser will be held at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center and admission tickets will be $40.
