Wamego Red Raiders football preview

Wamego head coach Dale Burkholder hopes to lead the Red Raiders back to the postseason.

WAMEGO (KSNT) – The Wamego Red Raiders earned seven victories last season but missed out on the playoffs.

Wamego moved into Class 4A Division II this year and aims for a return to the postseason.

“We’ve been improving and growing and man we’ve got a bunch of kids that want to play football,” Wamego head coach Dale Burkholder said. “I’ve got more kids than I know what to do with, we have 78 kids out here and they’re all hustling and busting their tail and I just love that. That makes me like dying and going to heaven.”

The defense returns 10 starters that helped pitch four shutouts last year.

“Wamego football is all about family,” Wamego senior offensive/defensive lineman Dylan Besthorn said. “All of us come out here and practice hard every day and we play for the community and we just want to be something that everybody is proud of.”

The Red Raiders bring back several All-League performers and face a new challenge against different district competition.

“We want to get out there and get the NCKL (North Central Kansas League) and see if we can get to the playoffs,” Wamego senior running back Trey Cohorst said. “That’s the most important goal is going to the playoffs.”

One of the bright spots returning is three-year starting quarterback Kyler Alderson. He earned first team All-League honors after throwing for more than 2,100 yards and 23 touchdowns.

“Wamego is all about family,” Wamego senior wide receiver Wyatt Totten said. “We have a really tight, close community and it’s really a blessing to be around.”

Wamego begins the season at home against Rock Creek on September 5th.

“We’re all really close and we’ve been with each other since 3rd grade,” Wamego senior center Colton Hitch said. “We’re going to try and stick together and punch this one through to the playoffs.”
