Late night fire in Mayetta downtown


MAYETTA (KSNT) – At 10:12 Thursday night the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a fire in the business district of Mayetta. Surrounding fire departments responded to the scene of 104 Main Street in Mayetta. The structure had recently been used as an office, however, had served as a café in years past.

The Mayetta Fire Department, Hoyt Fire Department, Holton Fire Department, Potawatomi Tribal Fire Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson County EMS responded to the scene. The fire was brought under control at 11:10 p.m.. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office have been contacted to assist the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation. The amount of the loss is unknown at this time.

The fire departments quick response prevented fire from spreading to a large building to the west.

On Friday the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office arrived at the scene. It was determined the fire started in the northwest portion of the structure. Approximately 15% of the structure was destroyed.

The remainder of the structure suffered from smoke damage.   The fire remains under investigation by the Kansas State Fire Marshal and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of the fire is currently undetermined at this time.
