Highland Park Scots football preview

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Highland Park failed to win a game last season at the varsity level and only captured one victory the year before in 2012.

But the Scots don’t lack intensity.

“Well, I expect a lot more competition,” Highland Park head coach Nick Cummings said. “I think we’ll be a lot more competitive. As a group we might surprise several teams hopefully at the end of the year. We’re just ready to go a lot more than we were the last two years.”

Cummings begins his fourth season at Highland Park.

“We turned into a family this year and we’ve grown a lot and try hard,” Highland Park junior quarterback Alex Rodriguez said.

The squad will have to replace multi-sport standout Kameron Clark, who was the heartbeat of the team the last couple of years as a quarterback and defensive back.

“Kameron was hard to replace because he’s such an athlete and very football smart,” Cummings said. “I think with Alex Rodriguez we’re getting the same kind of player with two years ahead of him to run the offense. He’ll do fine.”

“Jaime Fernandez is our middle linebacker coming back,” Cummings said. “He played all nine games as a freshman. As a sophomore he’s going to do his job. As a group we’re very young but we have a lot of experience because of what we’ve been doing the last two years.”

Highland Park kicks off the 2014 campaign against Junction City.

“We execute as a team, we win as a team and lose as a team,” Fernandez said.
