KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City police are investigating whether a man arrested Wednesday in an assault at a motel in the north part of the city was involved an earlier shooting that killed three and critically wounded two on the south side of town.

The shootings Tuesday afternoon took place in two homes in a middle-class neighborhood.

A couple of hours later, police learned that three people at a Motel 6 in a commercial area had been physically assaulted. The police statement said no weapon was used in those assaults but provided no other details. In investigating those assaults, police found a 2002 Toyota Highlander that had been stolen from one of the homes where the shootings took place.

The victims of the south Kansas City shootings were identified Wednesday as Lorene Hurst, 88; her son, Darrel Hurst, 63; and Susan Choucroun, 69.

The Hurst family said in a statement that Darrel was visiting his mother.

“While we are unsure of all the events that transpired that day, but we are comforted knowing they are together,” the statement said. “Our prayers go out to the other families and victims in the neighborhood as they are struggling to deal with their grief as well. Our hearts are broken and we ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Choucroun’s husband, Charles, owns the Leawood Beauty Salon. A message at the business Wednesday said it would be closed until Sept. 10 “due to the recent tragic shooting resulting in the death of Charles’ wife, Susan.”

Shortly before midnight, officers arrested a man with a gun whom they positively identified as a suspect in the motel assaults, the police statement said.

“The investigation continues to determine if there is any relationship between the motel assaults and the earlier homicides,” police said. They would not say whether they’re still looking for a suspect in the shootings.

Kansas City police spokeswoman Sgt. Kari Thompson said the shooting victims died at the scene, and two were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The names of the injured have not been released.
