Suspects make first court appearances

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The two men being held in connection with the death of a Topeka Police officer made their first appearances Monday morning.

Ross Preston Lane is accused of shooting Corporal Jason Harwood after a traffic stop Sunday afternoon.   Lee McGowan, assistant Shawnee County District Attorney, said Lane shot Harwood four times before fleeing the scene.  He and another person being held in connection with the shooting, Randy Allen Ridens, Jr., both fled to Lawrence.  Lane was taken into custody in Lawrence and Ridens was apprehended at a house in Linwood, Kansas.

Both were booked into the Shawnee County Jail early Monday morning.  Lane is being held for capital murder and is expected to be formally charged sometime Tuesday.  Lane is being held without bond and Ridens is being held on a one million dollar bond.   Ridens is being held for possession of stolen property, obstruction of justice and a probation violation.  Ridens list an address of 511 SW Western according to jail log information.  Lane’s listed address is 35076 SE 7th in Topeka.

A candlelight vigil will be held tonight at 8pm at the Law Enforcement Center at 320 S. Kansas Avenue for Cpl. Harwood.  Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation to the family may do so at the Topeka Police Credit Union located at 320S Kansas Ave Ste 100.
