TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNT) — While the emphasis is on the big, mass workout – the message is really about something else – creating a healthy lifestyle. Shawnee County health officials say the community needs to focus more on eating healthy and staying fit. They say Topeka has one of the worst problems with obesity in the state. for many- a simple workout can be the first step to starting a healthier lifestyle – like one woman who came to last year’s event.
“And then the next year she came back and she was laughing people on the lap, going through the entire workout without having to stop,” Health Promotion Coordinator Craig Barnes says.
Health officials say obesity and lack of physical activity is an on going concern and events like this help show people it’s easy to get active.
“But it’s also just a fun community event and so even for people who do exercise on a regular bases it’s something different for them to come out and take part in,” Shawnee County Health Agency Spokesperson Misty Kruger says.
That’s why in addition to a big, fun workout – there are also booths and vendors with tips and ideas you can do to live healthier. Last year more than 850 people have attended the health fair and then joined the workout.
“We’ve got two different instructors one that’s going to be doing the kind of cardio interval first workout and then the Zumba as well,” Barnes says.
This year the event drew a crowd of 645 attendees.
