ADA, Okla. – Seventh-ranked Washburn finished action Saturday afternoon in the South Central Classic with a 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 win over Langston.
The Ichabods wrapped up` the non-conference portion of their schedule 8-0 and will begin MIAA play Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host Emporia State at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
Leanna Willer had 10 kills and hit .500 as Washburn hit .360 as a team. Page Reigner hit .545 with seven kills and Marissa Cox hit .455 with seven kills. Liz Powell led the team with 24 assists and three different Ichabods tied for the lead with seven digs.
The Lions (3-6) hit under .050 in each set and led just once after scoring first in the second set. Washburn erased that deficit with a 6-0 run and later went up 14-5 with a 5-0 run where Cox had three straight kills.
Washburn pulled away in the third set with five straight points to lead 16-6 but Langston answered with four straight of its own. The Ichabods responded with an 8-0 run to get to match point and then they later took the match on a kill from Mattie-Ann Swenson.
Washburn hit .360 in the match and had 44 kills. Langston hit -.021 and had just 17 kills. Washburn had seven service aces with Powell getting three of them.
The Ichabods opened the year 8-0 for the seventh time in head coach Chris Herron’s 13 years. The school record is 15 straight wins to start a year in 2009.
