School closed after fire forced an evacuation

GARDEN CITY, Mo. (AP) — Classes are temporarily canceled at a Garden City school after a fire forced an evacuation.

Chief Mark Lopez says the fire was reported Tuesday afternoon at Sherwood Cass R-8. He says the flames were contained to a storage closet in the high school boy’s locker room but there is smoke damage throughout the building. No injuries were reported.

About 850 elementary, middle and high school students attend the school.

Cleaning crews will begin work on Wednesday and the school could be closed from one to five days. The extent of the damage is unclear.

It’s unclear what started the fire but Lopez says foul play is not suspected. Cass County and Missouri Fire Marshal officials are investigating.
