Woman awarded for aiding Harwood

TOPEKA, Kan.(KSNT)- According to The Topeka Capital Journal, Mana de Topeka’s Latina Awards presentation Saturday evening included a special recognition presented for the first time in the group’s 10 years: a humanitarian award.

Gina Barron Jaramillo was honored with the award for her actions in stopping to to render aid and comfort to Cpl. Jason Harwood after he was fatally shot Sept. 7.

Michelle Cuevas Stubblefield, who served as mistress of ceremonies for the event at Maner Conference Centre, said the award was created to honor and express “enormous gratitude” for a woman who had helped others in a profound way.

Police Chief James Brown and Deputy Chief Tony Kirk presented Barron Jaramillo with the award, and she received a standing ovation from the audience.
